ندوة Radiation Applications in Industry, Medicine, Agriculture and Environmental Protection
Abstract: Radiation applications cover many fields nowadays including Medicine, Industry, Agriculture, Environmental Protection and Scientific Research. The presentation will cover main applications in these fields. Fundamentals of radiation engineering are also presented. Examples of these applications include industrial radiography, nuclear gauges, well logging, sterilization of medical disposables, wire and cable, tire processing under industrial applications. Examples under medical applications include radiotherapy of cancer, nuclear medicine, and radiopharmaceuticals production. Examples under agricultural applications include food irradiation and radiation induced mutation breeding. Electron beam flue gas treatment and treatment of industrial wastewater are examples under environmental protection applications. Brief Biography: Ahmed Basfar received his B.Sc. in Nuclear Engineering in 1987, and M.Sc. in Nuclear Engineering in 1989 and PhD in Nuclear Engineering in 1992 with focus on Radiation Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park in USA. From 1992 to 2013, Basfar worked at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) at the Institute of Atomic Energy Research, where he established the Radiation Technology Centre consisting of three major research activities in the areas of radiation processing of polymers, high dose dosimetry and environmental applications of radiation in addition to ten supporting laboratories. He was Director of Atomic Energy Research Institute in KACST during 2002 – 2005. He has 31patents in the field of radiation technology and over 100 publications. From 2013 to 2018, he worked at King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE) as Director of the National Centre for Radiation Protection. From 2019 to 2020 he was Director of Radiological Regulatory Sector in Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC). Basfar was a Chairman of the IAEA Standing Advisory Committee on Nuclear Applications (SAGNA) during 2013 – 2018. He received The Best Invention Award during IBTIKAR under the patronage of King Abdullah Bin Abdelaziz in 2010 for “Halogen Free Flame Retardant -HFFR Technology for Wire and Cable” invention.
