Engineer Tarek Al-Kasabi Award 

For Excellence in Civil Engineering in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

1- About Eng. Al-Kasabi Award

The Eng. Al-Kasabi award was instituted in 2015 by the endowment of Engineer Tarek Al-kasabi. This prestigious Award is annually given to those scientists, engineers or researchers who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the fields of Civil Engineering. Currently, a new award for undergraduate research has been initiated to the Eng. Al-Kasabi Award to recognize undergraduate students who have conducted research in the Civil Engineering disciplines. The award is administered by the Department of Civil Engineering at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

2- Eng. Al-Kasabi Award Money

  • The total award money for research/invention excellency is SR 100,000 (one hundred thousand Saudi Riyals). The award grant is divided into three categories:
  • The first winner receives SR 50,000 (fifty thousand Saudi Riyals in addition to a certificate of appreciation).
  • The second winner receives SR 30,000 (thirty thousand Saudi Riyals in addition to a certificate of appreciation).
  • The third winner receives SR 20000 (twenty thousand Saudi Riyals, in addition to a certificate of appreciation).

These awards should must be distributed among various fields of civil engineering (explained in paragraph 5) if it is possible.

 

  • The new award for undergraduate research has been initiated to the Eng. Al-Kasabi Award to recognize undergraduate students who have conducted outstanding research in the Civil Engineering disciplines that can lead to new knowledge, improve our ability to solve problems, result in new theory, or in the development and optimization of existing systems.
  • The first winner receives SR 8,000 (eight thousand Saudi Riyals in addition to a certificate of appreciation).
  • The second winner receives SR 7,000 (seven thousand Saudi Riyals in addition to a certificate of appreciation).
  • The third winner receives SR 6,000 (six thousand Saudi Riyals in addition to a certificate of appreciation).
  • The fourth winner receives SR 5,000 (five thousand Saudi Riyals in addition to a certificate of appreciation).
  • The fifth winner receives SR 4,000 (four thousand Saudi Riyals in addition to a certificate of appreciation).

 

  • These awards must cover various fields of Civil Engineering (illustrated in paragraph 5).

3- Eng. Al-Kasabi Award Mission

  • Keeping up with the global developments in the technical field of Civil Engineering through applied scientific research in order to achieve applied scientific excellence.
  • Service and development of community through directed scientific research to meet the requirements of industrial development.

4- Eng. Al-Kasabi Award Objectives

  • Developing a spirit of creativity and innovation and to stimulate talent and capabilities through encouragement of applied scientific research in the fields of Civil Engineering in kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Strengthening the relationship between Saudi universities and the industrial/ private sectors.
  • Contributing to the localization and transfer of expertise and technology in the field of Civil Engineering.

5- Eng. Al-Kasabi Award Fields

The Eng. Al-Kasabi award is given for demonstrating outstanding contributions to any of the following fields of Civil Engineering.

  • Structural Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Water Resources Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Construction Management Engineering
  • Surveying Engineering

6- Eng. Al-Kasabi Award Categories

There are three categories of the Eng. Al-Kasabi award:

  • In the first category, a research paper published in a peer reviewed scientific ISI journal can be claimed for the award.
  • In the second category, any Granted Patent or innovative contribution, recognized by a reputed national or international organization, can be claimed for the award.
  • In the third category, an undergraduate research conducted in the Civil Engineering disciplines.

7- Evaluation Criteria

The Eng. Al-Kasabi award will be given based on the total score gained:

  • In the first category, the score of the submitted research will be calculated based on the Value of the research to the Kingdom; Rank of the journal (in which the research was published), the journal’s Impact factor; number of citations of the research etc.
  • In the second category, the score will be obtained based on Value of the patent to the Kingdom; Patent or innovation’s commercial value; reputation of the Patent granting office etc.
  • In the third category, the score of the submitted research will be calculated based on the value of the research to the Kingdom; Rank of the journal (in which the research was published), the journal’s Impact factor; number of citations of the research etc.

8- Eligibility Rules

Eligible Candidates:

The eligible candidates for Al-kasabi research/invention Excellency award are:

  • University faculty members, researchers, and scientists working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Engineers who are licensed to practice in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students studying in any university in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Studying abroad Saudi graduate students whom research work is related and applicable to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and who are first author in their submitted research.
  • The applicant, as a first author or co-author, has not been awarded the Eng. Al-Kasabi award for the last two rounds.

Eligible Researches, Patents, Innovations and Undergraduate Research:

  • It must be an applied research and had made a significant contribution to the field of Civil Engineering.
  • The submitted research, patent, innovation, or undergraduate research has not been awarded previously by Eng. Al-Kasabi award or any other awards and it is not under consideration for any award anywhere else.
  • If the work is a research paper, it must have been published in a peer review scientific ISI journal not before 2016.
  • If the work is a patent, it must have been granted not before 2016.
  • If the submitted work is an innovation, it must have received the approval of a reputed National or International organization not before 2016.
  • If the work is an undergraduate research, it must have been published in a peer review scientific ISI journal during his undergraduate studies.
  • The applicant must not participate in more than one research.

9- Annual Ceremony

  • The Eng. Al-Kasabi award will be given at the annual ceremony. In the current year, the annual ceremony will be held in December 2021. This ceremony will also be sponsored by Eng. Tarek Alkasabi.
  • The winners of the award will be notified one week before the date of the ceremony.

10- Application Process

Submit the following documents to the Head of the Scientific Committee of the Award electronically at the address alqasbiprize@ksu.edu.sa on or before 31/8/2021:

  • Clearly fill out the Application Form.     Form (A)       
  • A copy of the published research, Patent, or innovation in a PDF format.
  • A copy of the first page of the corresponding published scientific paper, if applied under the first category.
  • A copy of the corresponding granted patent or innovation, if applied under the second category
  • A copy of the published undergraduate research in a PDF format, and a copy of the student’s academic transcript indicating that he is currently enrolled in the undergraduate program of Civil Engineering.  If the applicant has already graduated, a copy of bachelor's degree certificate is required. , Form (B) 
  • A brief CV of the 1st author and co-authors.
